Ohiwa harbour
PTC Trust partnered with KG Kayaks to offer rangatahi the opportunity to learn and raise awareness about the health of Ōhiwa harbour.
Bay of Plenty regional council has identified Ōhiwa Harbour as an area of significant natural heritage value due to its unique landscape and ecological value. This multipurpose harbour is a favourite amongst those in Whakatane. There is no shortage of life and activity that occurs on its banks.
It provides an estuarine margin that filters off sedimentary pollutants from the rivers and streams before flowing out into the wider oceans. Numerous shore birds, shellfish and fish species inhabit the harbour. However, there is also an opportunity for boating, fishing, swimming etc.
Despite being protected by legislation, industrial development and recreation pose a challenge to the quality of the harbour and catchment and the health of the estuary and kaimoana.
By equipping rangatahi with opportunities to gain insight into the value of this ecosystem, PTC aims to promote a more informed youthful community that are prepared to build and create a more sustainable world.
