Sustainable Fibres 2

New Plymouth students were in for a treat at PTC’s second natural fiber and sustainable engineering workshop led by Dr Mohammed Beg and his team today. With over 40 students attending groups were split into teams and led to the various experimental areas including:

-3D Printing and processing of natural harakeke fibers;

-Making and breaking composite materials;

-Reinforcing sand with natural fibers.

The department’s Assistant Dean and a Māori representative provided insight and inspiration to these young ones, encouraging them to give Engineering a go and see where the opportunity them. The opportunities afforded with an engineering degree are widespread, ranging from:

  • Chemical and Biological Engineering

  •  Civil Engineering

  •  Electrical and Electronics

  •  Environmental Engineering

  •  Materials and Process Engineering

  •  Mechanical Engineering

  •  Megatronics Engineering

  •  Software Engineering and more

Through the PTC workshop, our young students were challenged to consider sustainable engineering options for becoming creative inventors and innovators in the future.
